What is This Zerk Fitting For?

When I began to explore the boat on April 1st, I took a lot of photos. The photo for this article shows the control panel and in the lower right corner is a Zerk fitting (it is mounted at the bottom of the panel, just to the right of the orange key fob). I’ve looked and looked at it, wondering what it was for.

Today I found a reference to it in the Nonsuch group archives, where the previous owner posted this:

I installed a Zerk fitting in the engine control panel connected via an armored flex pipe (long enough to still allow entry) for rudder shaft lube.

Now I need to find out how he pumped “rudder shaft lube” into the Zerk. I’m sure those parts are onboard in one of the several toolboxes on the boat!
